The Premiership also known as the Barclays Premier League is the Number 1 football Competition in England. Its popularity is unbelievable and is the most watched and documented league in the world. The money is staggering with the 2007-08 season seeing earnings of almost 2 billion pounds. The English Premiership was founded in 1992 and has seen 43 clubs enter but only four have ever won it. These are Blackburn, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United. Manchester United are its most successful entrant, having won the Premiership 11 times. So how does the English Premiership work? The points system is very simple;

Win 3 Points
Draw 1 Point
Loss 0 Points

The top four teams of the FA Premiership qualify for the Champions League with the top two teams instantly being put forward to the group stages. The bottom three clubs at the end of the season are relegated to the Championship which is regarded a very difficult league to be promoted from, so at the end of the season it can be a very intense battle to avoid relegation. Due to the money, media coverage and the glory it bestows, it is every team’s business to stay in the English Premiership.

You can see clearly by this that Manchester United has dominated with all of these titles won under the management of Alex Ferguson. However, the majority of the seasons in which they have won have only been decided in the last few games of the season showing why it is regarded as one of the most competitive and exciting leagues in the world, which is why so many people love English football.

This season (2009-10) was a very close race with the big three Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United battling it out at the top. In the English Premiership there was huge competition from Man City, Tottenham, Aston Villa and Liverpool who are still in with a chance of getting a shot at the title as well. This season we have seen one of the mid table teams Birmingham go fourteen games undefeated which is usually unheard of. Birmingham they have good squad of players but also a very capable manager. As discussed earlier a good manager is key to a clubs success. They went 14 games undefeated with the same team starting every time. This shows that when a team gets used to one another they start to blend and understand how each other plays. This is any manager’s dream and is why a team like Man United does so well in the English Premiership as players such as Giggs, Neville, Ferdinand and Scholes have played with each other for years and this helps any team gel very well, and results often reflect this. However, when you see mid table teams doing well such as Birmingham, Man City etc it is always a great concern to other managers as even a draw in the English Premiership is not enough, especially when the battle at the top is so intense.

The story of Blackburn Rovers winning the league in 1995 is an amazing one. The English Premiership title was decided on the last match of the season with Blackburn actually losing 2-1 to Liverpool. However Man U only managed a draw against West Ham so Blackburn took the season by a point. Blackburn was owned by Jack Walker who had bought the club 5 years earlier when they were in the second division. He acquired the manager, Kenny Dalglish and players such as Alan Shearer who led Blackburn to this historic victory. Sadly Blackburn Rovers have struggled since then but they are the only non giant club in recent years to have held the most coveted title in the world’s best league; the FA Premiership.

Football is changing. Over time the standard gets better and better. The FA Premiership is changing as well. Statistics will show in so many competitions that European and English teams dominate competitions. Even in the World Cup we see teams like England, Italy and France winning the tournament. Europe has more victors than any other continent proving the high standard that exists. We see new players come and go all the time but the standard of English football gets better and better.
