The major competition in Africa, also referred to as the (ANC) African Nations Cup is the most well known association football competition in that continenent. It is controlled by the (CAF) Confederation of African Football, and was first held in 1957, Egypt beating Ethiopia 4-0. It is the only football competition in the World that is held every two years, whereas all other major competitions are held every four years. The competition currently has 16 teams and has a rich history over the past 50 years. It is seen by some political leaders in Africa as the chance for the African nations to come together and get behind something. It brings out camaraderie among people in a continent where there is so much pain and suffering, poverty and warfare.
This competition really started to snowball in 1982 when a new rule was introduced that more than two professionals could play for each team. This markedly improved the standard of the competition, and thereafter it was taken a lot more seriously by the rest of the football world, especially those who had football clubs releasing players to represent their countires in the African Nations. It actually led to many football scouts going to Africa to see if they could find talented African players they could snap up for their clubs on the cheap.

Egypt is the most successful nation as it has won the competition a record seven times. Ghana and Cameroon have also won four times and currently there are 16 teams competing in the Cup. Angola were the hosts of the African Nations 2010 competition, while Gabon and Equatorial Guinea host the 2012 competition and Libya host the 2014 competition. In recent years the great Samuel Eto’o of Cameroon was the top Scorer in the 2006 and 2008 competition scoring 5 goals in each. In 2010 Egypt won this coveted African Cup for the seventh time.
The lead up to the African Nations Cup can be quite controversial as some countries struggle to provide the funds needed to host the competition. However, more recently in Angola, the 2010 hosts there was an unfortunate incident where gunmen open fired on Togo’s national team, killing three people and forcing Togo to withdraw from the African Cup. This incident has caused major concern about other competitions especially with the world cup imminent in South Africa. With the ever growing threat of terrorism it is a real worry as security can be breached if extra precautions are not taken. When the Togo bus was hit Adebayor of Man City was onboard but was left unharmed. No one wants to see anyone be killed but clubs do not want their key stars to be put in harm’s way either. Unfortunately the Premier League has far greater priority than the African Nations. With so many people going to South Africa it is a prime target for a terrorist attack. It would be wise for countries that want to host the competition in the future to consider the security implications carefully as the threat of terrorism is ever present. This put a dampener on the tournament this year however rest assured that the CAF and the African Nations Cup will continue to exist due to the passion for the game on the African Continent.
Egypt has won this competition 3 times in a row now. This has never happened in any major competition but there are reasons why this could happen in such competitions as the African nations cup. Africa is a continent ridden with poverty, aids and war which has hindered important issues such as education and development. However in the past 10 years three different countries have won the tournament including Egypt, Cameroon and Tunisia. These countries have something in common, tourism. Every year people come to these three countries for their holidays. This is because the weather is good and they are cheap. The country earns good money from this helping the economy therefore enabling them to plough more money into education and sport. This is why they have been successful in the African Nations cup as they have had money to spend on the development of football in their country. This has led to better players and a higher standard than other nations resulting in victory.
